Microsoft Surface

Posted: May 31, 2007 by jgrantmarshall in Uncategorized

You might remember seeing something similar to this in a previous video I posted, but here it is: Microsoft Surface.  If you’re asking yourself, “What in the world is he talking about?”, …don’t worry, I get that a lot… but what Surface is/will be is an altogether new User Interface.  Keyboard and mouse are gone and you will interact with your computer environment using your fingers and gestures… hmm, fingers and gestures probably should not be used in conjunction to describe something… but again I digress.  As is shown in the clip/commercial below, you can place real world devices (phones, cameras, credit cards) on the surface/desktop and it will be recognized.  To move data to/from the device you would just point to it with your finger and drag it to your device… synced!  I would love to have this on a laptop/tablet PC.

Below is a longer and geekier, but more in depth, demonstration of Surface.

Rose in our yard…Or in this case, work around the home is what we have been up to lately.  Natalie’s green thumb is definitely becoming apparent in this yard once devoid of ANYTHING flowering.  I have been mowing weekly and it has been amazing how well the “weed n feed” did for the front grass.  We picked over a dozen more radishes from the garden and have a bunch more to go.  Lettuce is doing well, too.  Today we will have a BBQ with family and have a chance to relax and enjoy our hard work.  Feel free to check our Flickr gallery for many pictures of the yard.

I’m Joost!

Joost™ the best of tv and the internet

I am finally setup with Joost!  Joost ( lets you watch TV over the internet and also incorporates some “community” vibe… like chat.  It requires a 10MB application download and it also seems to require a pretty beefy computer.  (It is crawling when playing video on my 2GHz 512 RAM machine… haven’t rebooted, yet, so things might not be so bad.  Could also be internet connection but the previously mentioned 10MB download went pretty quick.)  UI is pretty slick and buttons have text on mouseover in case you are not sure what the button does.  Seems pretty easy to use.

Let me know if you’d like an invite!

Saturday Project: Garden Gate

Posted: May 12, 2007 by jgrantmarshall in Uncategorized

As you can see in the Flickr photo gallery, today I finally got around to making a garden gate.  As you may remember, we had to fence off our new raised garden because Brandy (our dog) thought the garden made a nice place to run (we didn’t).  I got the OK from Natalie this morning to make it a “rustic” gate made from cedar fencing that the previous owners of our house left.  I wanted it to have a little bit of flash and not just cut straight at the top.  My first thought was to dog ear the tops, like the rest of the backyard fence, but creativity got the better of me.  I decided to cut the top in a inward half circle, figuring my circular saw should be able to do curves.  Making the inward circle proved to be a difficult job because once I got about the length of the blade into the cut, the back of the blade got caught where I started the cut.  Not the right tool for the job, as everyone else probably already knew.  I ended up getting it pretty close and then using a wood rasp to finish the curve… so don’t look too closely at it.  I’m calling it a Happy Mother’s Day for Natalie.

When I was finished and was showing off my work, Grant picked the first veggies from our garden.  Radishes are ready, and it is only the beginning of May!  I am excited for our garden this year!

 What did you do today?
