Cholesterol Results

I went to the Doctor earlier in the week to have some blood drawn to check my cholesterol levels and I got the results back today.  That has got to be the fastest turn around time that I’ve ever had for test results!

Anyway…

My cholesterol level was 130 mg/dl, down from my previous 2 at 157 and 148 respectively!  I still will need to take medication, but all metrics were finally in normal categories.

I have been eating oatmeal with a tablespoon of honey (Quaker Old Fashioned and not the instant packets) for about a month now.  Perhaps that helps to explain the 18 point drop since March.  I switched from the packets because I could eat about 2x as much for the same amount of calories and not necessarily for the cholesterol lowering properties that they tout on the commercials.

Also, I just entered these results in my Google Health account and while I was there, I changed my weight from 200 to 185.  That was a pretty good feeling… 15 pounds since March… and I thought I felt good then!  However, just to ensure I was again grounded, Google Health nicely computed my BMI for me… 25.1.  The cutoff for “normal weight” was 24.9.  Still overweight, according to BMI.  Oh, well.  Just something to stoke the fire.

Graffiti Weekend

Posted: July 26, 2008 by jgrantmarshall in Uncategorized

A couple of weekends ago we went to Graffiti in Roseburg, OR.  It is an entire weekend worth of classic cars and related activities but we usually only go to the evening parade.  How it works is that downtown is basically shut off of normal car traffic and a circular route is laid out for the classic cars to parade around and around and around.  The drivers pass out candy to the kids and generally show off their automotive pride and joy.  It is fun for all!

Below is a quick clip from the Show N Shine that is held in the park.  I think the Show N Shine had more cars and was more interesting than the parade.  I won’t miss it next year.

185 Pounds!

Posted: July 25, 2008 by jgrantmarshall in fitness, health

I meant to share this with you yesterday…  On my weigh-in, I was 185.3 pounds!  .3 away from my goal!  That is 40.7 pounds total lost and is 18.01% of my body weight.  It is close enough that I’m going to count it as goal met.  I can’t believe that I am here!

Although, I have been of the mindset now for so long that it was only a matter of time and not an “if”, that it almost doesn’t feel as special.  I’ve already become accustomed to the idea that I would definitely be 185.  I liken it to turning 21… it was really cool to want to be 21 when you’re 18, but no big deal when you actually turn 21.  I wish I would have spent more time writing down when I was heavier how I thought I would feel at 185.

Oh, well… I feel good and look better and that’s what really matters (to me, anyway).

In other news, my knee started feeling better last week and I waited until Wednesday to put it to the test.  I jogged 3 miles on the treadmill and felt fine… until I stepped off and noticed it was still a bit wonky.  Throughout Wednesday, though, I didn’t notice it acting up at all.  Today, still feeling good, I hit the elliptical trainer for 30-ish minutes.  No issues!  I think my knee is going to recover!  Thank you all for the good thoughts!

XBox 360: Another Trip to Texas

Posted: July 19, 2008 by jgrantmarshall in xbox

I should have signed my XBox 360 up for frequent flyer miles because it has again died on me (3 red lights).  I sent it back yesterday.  This is the second time in less than 6 months!  I knew the first time I played my “returned/rebuilt” 360 that I would be sending it back because right off the bat it froze up on me.  Up until recently, though, it would be fine after a hard reboot and would only occasionally freeze up after that.  I would guess that 1 in 8 times it would have problems freezing.  Earlier this week though it happened 2x in a row and after the reboot, I got nothing but the 3 red lights on the front.  Dang.  At least the weather is nice now and I would rather be outside anyway… and at least I didn’t just subscribe to XBox Live, like last time!  (Monte, if I get a free subscription to XBL are we back on on Tuesday nights?)

It is interesting that the mailing label this time is going to a different town/address than my first time.  This time it is going to Mesquite instead of McAllen, TX.  Anyone know why?

I’ll post updates…

**UPDATE: It made it there but unable to deliver due to adverse weather… stupid Dolly interfering with my XBox!**

Lay-offs

As a lot of you already knew, my workplace is planning some lay-offs claimed to be due, in large part, to the economy and specifically to the high cost of fuel.  The number going around is that the under performing, bottom 10% will be let go.

There are a number of reasons to keep me from worrying too much about these lay-offs, such as an already small IT force in my location, a good yearly review (where I received a bonus), and the firing of someone in my department just last week.  However, each day has found me stressing a little bit more, and I seem to be much more calm than a lot of others in the building.  Communications have been eerily quiet this week for official requests, while the rumor mill is off the chart.

In the past day or two, I have it from reliable sources that the slash and burn will be this Monday, 7/21/08, and more importantly, all IT in my location will still be employed come Tuesday.  Although, I was fairly certain that this was going to be the case, I am relieved and will be much more relieved after Monday.

Even if all goes well for me on Monday, I am uneasy how the day will unfold.  I have been told there will be some surprising departures and to be ready to collect laptop computers, cell phones and to be ready to disable computer accounts.  It is also reassuring to know that additional security guards will be on hand (not sure at this point if I’m being sarcastic or not).  Since people have known this to be coming now for 2 weeks and I would think that you’d know if you were in the bottom 10% of your team, I am concerned about how some agents may react.  Hopefully, you won’t hear about it on the nightly news…

Patello-femoral Pain Syndrome

Posted: July 11, 2008 by jgrantmarshall in Uncategorized

I’m playing Dr. Jason and I think I am suffering with Patello-femoral Pain Syndrome.

Sounds scary…

Really, it just means that I have a pain in my knee caused by over use.  The pain is mostly just dull becoming slightly sharp when I am over doing it.  I notice while stretching my quads (by bringing my foot up to my rear) that my knee is a bit more “tight” feeling than my other knee, too, although I do not see any swelling.

According to my favorite source of knowledge, Wikipedia:

Patello-femoral Pain Syndrome refers to the earlier stages of the condition, where symptoms are often fully reversible using treatments such as the RICE method (an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), anti-inflammatory painkillers, physiotherapy and treatment of any underlying cause of the pain. It is often simply an overuse injury.

I am now doing my best to not add stress to it while I am exercising and using the RICE method in the evenings at home.

If there are any doctors in the house, please leave a comment with any recommendations and advice.  It will be greatly appreciated!

Jalapeno Burgers

Posted: July 6, 2008 by jgrantmarshall in Uncategorized

On the 4th, as usual, I found myself grilling burgers.  One of the beauties of barbecueing is the ability to tinker a bit with seasonings because, face it, you can’t really screw up BBQ.  Well, I tinkered well enough to want to share it with the world!  I made Jalapeno Cheeseburgers and I will tell you how I did it.

First, I started with my standard hamburger seasoning (onion soup mix).  I do about 1/2 packet for 1 pound of meat.  Next, I cut up a fresh jalapeno into small pieces and I left the seeds in for added heat.  Then, I added about a tablespoon of taco seasoning.  The last ingredient was a teaspoon of minced garlic (I like the pre-minced bottles of garlic from Costco).  Put all of the ingredients into a big bowl to mix with your hands, form into patties and get your grill on.
