As a lot of you already knew, my workplace is planning some lay-offs claimed to be due, in large part, to the economy and specifically to the high cost of fuel.  The number going around is that the under performing, bottom 10% will be let go.

There are a number of reasons to keep me from worrying too much about these lay-offs, such as an already small IT force in my location, a good yearly review (where I received a bonus), and the firing of someone in my department just last week.  However, each day has found me stressing a little bit more, and I seem to be much more calm than a lot of others in the building.  Communications have been eerily quiet this week for official requests, while the rumor mill is off the chart.

In the past day or two, I have it from reliable sources that the slash and burn will be this Monday, 7/21/08, and more importantly, all IT in my location will still be employed come Tuesday.  Although, I was fairly certain that this was going to be the case, I am relieved and will be much more relieved after Monday.

Even if all goes well for me on Monday, I am uneasy how the day will unfold.  I have been told there will be some surprising departures and to be ready to collect laptop computers, cell phones and to be ready to disable computer accounts.  It is also reassuring to know that additional security guards will be on hand (not sure at this point if I’m being sarcastic or not).  Since people have known this to be coming now for 2 weeks and I would think that you’d know if you were in the bottom 10% of your team, I am concerned about how some agents may react.  Hopefully, you won’t hear about it on the nightly news…

My First Day

Hey… I made it through my first day at my new job today!  Everything went well and it was really nice to be so warmly welcomed.  I met many new people and I am feeling a little intimidated at the prospect of remembering them all, what they do and where their workspace is.  I guess the good news is that all of this will come in time.  I haven’t really found any aspects of my new job that was unsuspected and I feel really excited that I will be able to hit the ground running.  I think this position will be a good fit… both ways.

In other news, we purchased a new used vehicle over the weekend!  We got a ’97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.  It is super-loaded with gadgets, bells and whistles… a Geek’s dream!  I’ll post again with more details later.

Anyway, thanks for reading…

My new job…

It is official.  I have resigned from my current position and have accepted a new one across town.  I am finding it amazing that I will soon be paid more to be responsible for a LOT less!  I feel the stress level coming down already.  I’m not exactly sure that I want it posted on the internet where I work but if you’re interested, leave me some feedback & I’ll get back to you.  Thanks for your words of encouragement!
